Spectral features of solar wind turbulent plasma

چکیده
Spectral properties of a fully compressible solar wind Hall Magnetohydrodynamic plasma are investigated by means of time dependent three dimensional Hall MHD simulations. Our simulations, in agreement with spacecraft data, identify a spectral break in turbulence spectra at characteristic length-scales associated with electromagnetic fluctuations that are smaller than the ion gyroradius. In this regime, our 3D simulations show that turbulent spectral cascades in the presence of a mean magnetic field follow an omnidirectional anisotropic inertial range spectrum close to k. The onset of the spectral break in our simulations can be ascribed to the presence of nonlinear Hall interactions that modify the spectral cascades. Our simulations further show that the underlying charachteristic turbulent fluctuations are spectrally anisotropic, the extent of which depends critically on the local wavenumber. The fluctuations associated with length scales smaller than the ion gyroradius are highly compressible and tend to exhibit a near equipartition in the velocity and magnetic fields. Finally, we find that the orientation of velocity and magnetic field fluctuations critically determine the character of nonlinear interactions that predominantly govern a Hall MHD plasma, like the solar wind.

Turbulent Spectra in the Solar Wind Plasma
Observations of interstellar scintillations at radio wavelengths reveal a Kolmogorovlike scaling of the electron density spectrum with a spectral slope of −5/3 over six decades in wavenumber space. A similar turbulent density spectrum in the solar wind plasma has been reported. The energy transfer process in the magnetized solar wind plasma over such extended length-scales remains an unresolved...
متن کاملWhistler Wave Cascades in Solar Wind Plasma
Nonlinear three dimensional, time dependent, fluid simulations of whistler wave turbulence are performed to investigate role of whistler waves in solar wind plasma turbulence in which characteristic turbulent fluctuations are characterized typically by the frequency and length scales that are respectively bigger than ion gyro frequency and smaller than ion gyro radius. The electron inertial len...

The Bandt-Pompe permutation entropy and the Jensen-Shannon statistical complexity are used to analyze fluctuating time series of three different turbulent plasmas: the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the plasma wind tunnel of the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX), drift-wave turbulence of ion saturation current fluctuations in the edge of the Large Plasma Device (LAPD), and fully de...
متن کاملMulti-Taper Method for Spectral Analysis and Signal Reconstruction of Solar Wind Data
Fluctuations in the solar wind characteristics such as speed, temperature, magnetic strength and density are associated with pulsations in the magnetosphere. Coherent magnetohydrodynamic waves in the solar wind may sometimes be a direct source of periodic pulsations in the frequency interval 1 to 7 mHz in the magnetosphere. In studies of the solar wind and the way its variation affects the magn...
متن کاملMagnetic turbulence in a table-top laser-plasma relevant to astrophysical scenarios
Turbulent magnetic fields abound in nature, pervading astrophysical, solar, terrestrial and laboratory plasmas. Understanding the ubiquity of magnetic turbulence and its role in the universe is an outstanding scientific challenge. Here, we report on the transition of magnetic turbulence from an initially electron-driven regime to one dominated by ion-magnetization in a laboratory plasma produce...
